It looks as though the sun will still be with us on Monday so how about a bike ride to Katwijk. (for those of us not slaving away in an office or escaped the country!)

There will, of course, have to be several enforced stops at cafes etc along the route!  CLICK HERE for route map.

I’ll start in Marlot at 10.00.  If you would like to start with me in Marlot or join at Meijendel or Wassenaarseslag then leave a comment in the box below and we’ll work out the logistics together.

If anyone else wants to organise a departure point from Voorschoten, please feel free to add a comment too.

It was a perfect day! The first ten minutes found us circling a roundabout and sporting a perplexed frown until we discovered that all the signs were pointing the wrong way! Once on the right path there was nothing to complain about.  It was heavenly and if you missed it, don’t worry, below is the route which is well worth the effort with or without blossom. Give it a try.

We started at Kesteren station, followed the beautiful Rijnbaandijk, hived or is that hove off into Lienden for a beer and a coffee (not mixed) then back along the dijk, across the Neder Rijn by ferry  and onto Amerongen castle for tea and appelgebak. Homeward bound, we took another small ferry back across the river and joined up with our original route for the ride back to the station and the comfort of our car seats! In 6 hours we had covered about 30 km at a reasonably leisurely pace with plenty of stops.  A wonderful day! Thanks go to www.planjeroute.nl for the excellent map.

Hopefully this year our timing will be just right for spotting some blossom. I was hopelessly late last year and had almost completely missed it, though you will see from the photos that it was very pretty indeed.

The plan:

We are going to drive down with our bikes on our bike rack.

We’ll meet at Kesteren station as it is on the cycle route, between 12.00 and 12.15.

According to NS there is free parking there but I’m sure we can find somewhere nearby if necessary.

If you want to travel with your bikes by train, it looks to me as if the train from Den Haag via Utrecht to Rhenen might be faster with a 12 minute cycle across the Neder Rijn to Kesteren.

The blossom route I took last year was about 20km but we can play it by ear (or bottom!)

If you would like to join us sign up  here so that we can exchange mobile numbers and

see  who we need to wait for at the meeting point.

Some repeats of last year’s outings and some new ones.

When?: 21 April. Meet at 10.50 for a walk at 11.00.

Where?: My favourite place in Den Haag for a walk. Voorlinden to the Boerderij at Meijendel.

The walk is through the woods and up onto the dunes,  where hopefully,  if it is a clear day, we will be able to see the ships out at sea.

It is possible to choose,  at this point, to do a short walk round the Landgoed and back to the car park.

Or we can aim for the Boerderij at Meijendel which could take about an hour, if we don’t get lost!

( Bring pocket money and or snacks as the cafe may be full.)

Click here for link to Landgoed Voorlinden on Googlemaps.

From the Buurtweg. ( Ignore the signs at the entrance.  I have a permit.)  Follow the long driveway towards the big house.  You will eventually be directed to a car park on your left.  We will meet there. Dogs are allowed but only on a lead.

Sunday 5th May a cycle ride through the blossom orchards of the Betuwe.

Last year I was too late and missed the blossom!

Watch this space for more details.

Friday 17th May the Olmenhorst Spring Fair.

Click here for details.  Meeting times and travel plans to follow.

Thursday 13th June National Theatre Live from London at Pathe Buitenhof in den Haag.

A live performance of The Audience with Helen Mirren.

Click here for details and to reserve. SELLING OUT VERY QUICKLY!

Let’s meet in the bar at 19.30 as usual.

Remind me next year that we need to go 2 or 3 weeks earlier. So how about the queens birthday or thereabouts?

Anyway it was all very pretty.

I cycled through Ochten,  Alst, Kesteren, Lienden and Ommeren along a lovely path on top of the dike.

The Eiland van Maurik looked interesting. In the car on the way there and back I crossed the Lek and Neder Rijn on two lovely little ferries.

Must go back to Amerongen which I passed through at 7 in the evening.  It had a stunning looking castle, pretty little streets and lots of tempting looking cafes and restaurants.

At last! Some blossom.
